Hi everbody,

Is there anybody out there in Kopaonik who can tell me what the snow cover is like please?

I have tried to check the webcam for the snow conditions but by the time I get home from work it's dark in Serbia so I can't see the image on the webcam.

Thanks for your help:ok:

There was 30cm of snow a week ago, so i guess it can only be more than 30cm at this moment.Dont worry there is always enough snow on Kopaonik for skiing, particulary in january.

Hi Cafu,

Very warm (for the end of november) in Serbia these days, and it doesn't look good about the snow cover in the next 2 weeks:

No Snow in Swindon, thanks for the image, a lot less white than I was hoping for but there's nearly 6 weeks until I go so it should (hopefully) look very different by then.

Cheers

Couple of questions for the locals:

Whats the snow coverage like mid-late january (I'm flying on the 21st) should I expect over 100cm's?

When do the national holidays end?

Cafu
01.12.2006, 19:48
I don't want to worry anybody but this 10 day forecast for Kopaonik doesn't look too promising. www.weather.co.uk (http://www.weather.co.uk)

Unless of course you want to sunbathe :)

Mikri
01.12.2006, 22:12
It should be more than 100cm's, national holidays end at 15 january or something like that, but they are definately over before you come here :) Still there will be a lot of people i think.

hy there!

Could you tell me something about the snowconditions at the beginning of March? Is there still powder or even more spring-like conditions? With spring-like conditions I mean, that firm in the morning, softening to corn snow, then possibly slush, or sg like this
Or we'll find mid winter with waistdeep freshies,:) ?

thank in advance

Hi all,

I'm still not confident that the snows are going to come in time for my holiday.

So far this has to be my favourite weather link:

http://weather.aol.com/main.adp?location=YIXX0024

Some of the other sites show sunny skies for 7-10 days, I hope they are wrong and the above link is right. I'm getting very worried that my skiing holiday will become a hiking holiday.

Fingers crossed everybody - good luck :ok:

Cafu
05.12.2006, 21:28
I also like this link:

Please be right and stay like that until the end of January!!

Stani
05.12.2006, 22:39
^^so the min. temps are quite nice, they're enough low to make some man-made snow if the mother nature doesn't bring some freshies...

btw, also in the Alps is the snowcover really sh**t, it's a crap seasonstart :/

Hey Stani,

Do they have snow blowing machines in Kop then? I tried to find out if there were any but had no luck.

Thanks

I'm not sure, but I think they have. I remember, that past season just saw some pics with snowguns at Kopaonik. Maybe the locals have more infos..

Does anyone know how the serbian weather works (which direction does the snow come from)?

I'm starting to get a little nervous, the forecasts seem to have huge variations between them... some show warm sunny days, others show the odd snowshower, while others are forecasting rain.

This time last year Kop looked very different :sm008:

It will snow, it's got to, it's got to, I can't buy new skis and end up hiring a mountain bike for a week!!

Hopefully the 100mph winds we've got coming over the weeked will blow some snow over to Serbia (Kop in particular).

If it's green at Christmas then I will really be worried.

Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I hope the snows come this week, the forecasted fall today doesn't look like it's going to happen :sm008: the forecasted snow may be at the top of the mountain... but a 1cm dusting at the top isn't going to be enough :(

the temprature seems to be dropping but its still falling as rain :(

my guess is that tonight we'll see a little snow, tomorrow will see a bit of sleet and then we'll see some more sleet at the end of the week... I think we'll see our first real snow next week, and a nice dump the week after to give us the base layer....

haha I hope as I don't think they have mountain biking in kop ;)

Cafu
10.12.2006, 19:23
It's alright for you JC, I think you go out there after us, we're Jan 14th so that base layer needs to form pretty quickly.

We need a few days good snow fall and then for the temperatures to stay low, hopefully this snow will stay and form the base layer.

Have a peek at www.serbiaski.com (http://www.serbiaski.com) if you want to compare current snow conditions in regional ski resorts (Serbia, Bosnia, Bulgaria, Greece).. a full scale disaster coming for skiers near by, due to a serious lack of snow
;(
However, Kopaonik is pretty much safe - we dont need a huge snow there in order to keep the skis from scratching the ground..

I went to Kopaonik last January, went on the 21st January for a week, going again this year on the 14th. The snow cover last year was excellent, well over a metre in places, only saw one patch of grass on the slopes and that was under a conifer tree. The first couple of days last year were really cold, not just cold, but really cold. Even the ski instructors didn't enjoy going out, one of the coldest weeks on record. An Irish chap who got lost almost died one night!
The first couple of weeks in January are really cold and the slopes are quite busy as it's holiday season in Serbia. It gets a little quieter at the end of January and still nowhere near as busy as France or Switzerland.
I've got loads of photos from last year, plenty of snow. There's also quite a bit forecast for the next ten days. We'vre kept in touch with our ski chappy from last year and he said there's always plenty of snow in January and into February.

I am looking at the live webcam and it will say 3cm until it's updated at about 14:00.

Wish the webcam was higher up, how the car park looks doesn't bother me LOL

Some sites are predicting about 30cm of snow falling over the next week and then others are predicting just fog. Really frustrating. All the sites I look at are associated with buying holidays there so they wouldn't have a hidden interest in predicting snow that isn't coming. Blah, some consensus would be nice xD

Afternoon All,

I too have booked myself in for the week commencing the 21st. Having taken the gamble on an unknown resort and booked the holiday last night with 3cm of snow on the ground imagine my delight when I checked this morning to find 16cm! And with more showers forecast over the next 10 days!

I'm not ashamed to say I danced round the office.

My only concern is the size of the resort, I'm sure that 30 runs can keep me busy for a week though.

I recommend trying snow boarding to anyone, even if you hate it at least you end up a bit more understanding about what boarders go through xD You have to be so much fitter, continually undoing the straps on one foot totally knackered me out!!!! Not to mention trying to use a rope lift (what is the technical term for one of those) was impossible, especially if you board goofy!! However I liked the fact you could use throwing yourself on the floor as an emergency break, much easier to do than on skies!

-JC-

I'd have liked to of seen 40cm going into January, but 20cm should be enough to act as the base for the 100cm that'll drop before the 21st ;)

now_snow, yeah she's the skiier - she tried snowboarding last time but didn't like walking round in big boots dragging a board behind her... i figure that if shes on ski's she can drag her self along.

snowploughprincess the throwing yourself over to stop loses its appeal when you pick up any speed ;)

LOL JC xD Wasn't much danger of me getting faster than a snail the slope they had us on rofl I think I'd be a bit scared to go down a proper slope, it is a lot harder than it looks!

I tried it because I have an injury to my left ankle which means my right skies fairly nicely but my left goes at a weird angle. If you see anyone skiing like that give them a wave, it's probably me xD

Same here - I am woried that my new one will suffer because there is not enough snow depth.

And, with this fog it will be good if there are flights - I am flying from Heathrow to Belgrade on Saturday and I am getting a bit worried now!

Yes, the fog in the UK is looking like a problem at the moment especially at Heathrow. We are flying from Gatwick to Nils at 6am on Xmas Eve, the fog is rumoured to stay around for a few days so we could both be stranded at the airport!

Fingers crossed, we all make it there and there's enough snow to have a bit of fun at least.

On the same day there could also be enough humidity to fall as snow... does this mean that from the 25th to the 29th kop could expect a little snow?

I hope so as it looks like it could warm up a little from the 30th :glavaozid

We went to Kop last year, bucket loads of snow, but very, very cold!
It did warm up at the end of the week, we went 21st Jan for a week. Going a week earlier this year because of kids exams!
Children had never skiied before - when we got back we saw the programme on the Beeb. The children's ski instructor is the girl who taught our girls - they really enjoyed it and by the end of the week (only 6 & 8) they were skiing down some of the easier slopes with us!
There's plenty of slopes to keep everyone busy and for any doubters I've got some mobile phone clips showing the snow levels for last year, not sure how to down load them mind!!! The resort is better for beginners and intermediate skiiers... my son was a bit bored with the black runs after a couple of days, mind you he's 13 and if it doesn't go click and involve a computer screen then it's boring anyway!

To have really good snow the cars on that webcam need to be covered! If they're not covered by the 16th January have a look at it on the 17th January at about 10am - you'll see me bearing my arse to all of those disappointed people, anxiously watching it for snow!

If you can see my arse, cancel your holiday and get yourself off to Canada. If you can't see my arse that's because it's either too foggy or I've managed to find that hire car I've just enquired about my my arse will be with me heading North West to the Alps!

Here's to keeping a warm arse!

I've just had an email from the chappy who was our instructor last year. He lives in Belgrade, this is what he's just said about the weather...
As far as snow is concerned, there is still no need to worry, but the truth is - you never know for sure. The mountain is unpredictable, and if the snow falls for a couple of days (two or three) there could be plenty of snow. Usually, this time of year there is not enough snow, but we are always expecting it around New Year. My friends - the instructors are going to the mountain this weekend so we will have constant reports on snow coverage before you arrive :). I hope you won't be disappointed.
So hopefully snow should be good... but just to be on the safeside I'm still looking for that hire car!

JC, Roastbeef - It's good to know i'm not the only one constantly watching the camera, my missus has given me so much grief this last week or so - think she's feeling neglected - if she was white and cold she would be getting shed loads of attention :)

Here we all are praying for snow and not even giving a though to what father Christmas is going to bring us. I might send a new letter asking for lots of snow in Kop throughout the whole of January.

Keep up the snow dances people, I give you my word I will do the same at this end (as soon as the hangover clears up and I can go 10 mins without feeling the need to boff).

Yeah they're this year.

The snow isn't looking good for Europe until way into January; the high looks like its not only hanging on but getting hotter! Theres a strong possibility that the 20 cm's on the ground today will of all melted by the time the fresh snow arrives.

Tomorrow and Tuesday should see a little snow, with another dusting on the 31st... Then on the 3rd/4th of January onwards (depending on what the high does) I reckon we could see upto 10cm of snow.

But I wouldn't expect any heavy snowfall untill well into January, possibly february :couto:

Last evening I returned from Kopaonik ( if you didn't know the right name of this beautiful mountain is Kopanik without letter o between a and n :) I read somewhere).
The fact is that I have skiing yesterday:), but...
It was opened just one line (Mali Karaman) with 9,5 minutes ride up (in full season not more 4-4,5 minutes need); :sm008:
Snow: just enough for good ride, on few spots you can see the ground:sm008:
On two lines nearby Pancic snow guns done good job:)
Think JC is right :"But I wouldn't expect any heavy snowfall untill well into January, possibly february"
But you can expect good fun and lot of entertainment there.
Wellcome.

Hi, I think we've all been watching the webcam on the Jat appartments. I don't know if anyone else has found this website, but there seems to be a live webcam on it... it shows the area in front of the main ski school, by the basketball pitches, and at the bottom of the main new lift up to Kopanik mountain... you can actually see people on skis!

Nice to see that despite the rapidly depleting snow levels, runs are still open.

Matrix, how many snow canons did you count? I was under the impression there weren't any... You just made me a very happy man.

The GFS looks terrible today, the tempratures look set to rise again and any chance of snow before the 10th seems a distant dream :( Anything that would of fallen as snow has either disappeared or looks set to drop as sleet or rain.

If you're going before the 21st I would be on my knees praying daily as the anticyclone over europe is refusing to budge :awm2:

A lot can happen in 3 weeks, weather forecasts aren't an exact science and are often way out... The problem for snow conditions has been an anticyclone over europe (which can probably hold out for another week), if you can wait a week I'd watch what happens between the 2nd & 4th as this will determine what weather Kop should expect.

If you've booked with Thomson/Crystal you might want to give them a ring as until they've issued the tickets you can move your holiday date (sometimes for as little as the administration fees... a lot less harsh than losing 70% of your money).

Cafu
26.12.2006, 12:40
Alrite JC hope you had a good Xmas, pitty Santa didn't bring us 6 weeks positive snow forecast.

We are booked with Thomsons and last week we asked if we could put the dates back to Feb and were told we would lose 70% as we are within 8 weeks of departure, I though that was a bit steep myself??

Not sure what to do now, this morning we've been discussing the option of trying to transfer to Andorra or somewhere like that, they have the snow but the down side is it's characterless, whereas Kop looks full of tradition and charm.

I expect that admin fees will be extortionate if we did decide to change. The missus suggested binning the snow and transfering to Tenerife/Gran Canaria but I need to ski :ski: I desperately need my fix of adrenaline!!!

The long range forecasts look crap, it's the same all over Eastern Europe, the runs aren't open in Bulgaria yet either.

Who knows.................I can't bl**dy decide.............s*d it I'm off down the pub:cug:

26.12.2006, 12:54
Cafu IMHO I think what JC is saying would be the best thing to do. Conditions can change dramatically, even over night. Weather forcasting is not an exact science, even with todays technology! Wait till the week before and make decisions then.

Here's the small print from Thompson if you are travelling with them (or Crystal) which gives details of cancellation refunds etc. - Basically not much I'm afaraid.

http://www.thomsonski.co.uk/termsandconditions.html

Personally I would go for it anyway, (as I am anyway- like you guys on 14th). I have skied for over 35 years (more than 70 weeks) and have not had some snow to play on. Even if just a couple of runs are open there is still lots of fun to be had, games to play and technique to work on. I know that sounds far from ideal but you guys have worked hard to pay for your holiday and will have some very dissappointed nippers to deal with if you cancel. Believe you me, I will be extreemly dissapointed if there is absolutly no snow.

I hope you do decide to go, even more that we get a dump the week we go or better still when we are there, and we meet up in Kop for a bevvie or some!

I will just have to keep praying for snow in the meantime.

Morning, a friend of mine's son has just come back from Chamonix - one broken arm and concussion! The snow ran out but he kept going... Dad was supposed to be flying out today with his lad to Chamonix but has had to cancel... he wants to know about Kop now.

I said to bring his lad on the 14th because the snow might have run out there as well and he can break his other arm!

What about if we all go outside and blow as hard as we can in the direction of the anticyclone and see if we can move it, praying doesn't seem to be working. The live webcam at Kop that I've been looking at has changed angle from last night, it's looking towards the bottom of slope 14 I think... it's too far in the distance to see if anyone is skiing but there seems to be a few people around the bottom of the slope!

If you choose tenerife over kopaonik you're insane (kids or no kids) ;)

After reading thomsons T&C it looks like if you cancel between today and the 6th you're going to lose 90% of your money... As weather is unpredictable I'd take my chance with kop... Pretty much every forecaster has predicted snow from mid-January onwards.

There's a little hope for the second week of January... I wouldn't cancel anything just yet.

HI happy people,
Santa hasn't been in Serbia yet. :)
We celebrate Cristmas on 7.01., so there's still some hope.

I have seen many times 30cm or more snow for 24h, even overnight up there, and considering insecurity of long-term (10+) days weather predictions....still no reason to be (very) upset :yay:

Things are starting to look a little better, There is a chance of the UK getting a cold northerly in a weeks time which could be strong enough to push the low pressure into Southern Europe... With a bit of luck this could mean snow... But more importantly it could solve the anticyclone problem that is rapidly turning kopaonik green.

Hopefully this will mean those going on the 14th will be greeted by much colder conditions.

For us lot on the 21st the anticyclone should be long gone and hopefully we'll be making snow angels in 70cm's of snow (haha if only)

mmm rakija
local brand is a plum brandy=rakija (shljivovica-if anyone can spell it- please...). Of course it's also made of grape, apricot (especially good, and slightly more expensive)..., but plums are national fruit. In winter, what you'll probablly like the most is hot, cooked rakija - local speciality. There's also a cooked vine-my recommendation. Prices are ~ 1-1.5 pound.

The fancy webcam has stopped working for me as well... doesn't look like much snow fell last night.

However, I reckon we could see a light snow shower/s on every day (bar a couple) for the next two weeks, unfortunatly in most cases it wont be anything to get excited about (but at least we're on the right track)... The Apreski looked pretty good from what I saw of it, there are plenty of bars to try out. I thought "Hawa Krya" next to the Burton Shop and "Exit" were the best. There was a disco as well in the main complex, but it wasn't open when we were there. Or it might have been open but I was too knackered to be out late.

I took my board that had only seen 3 days of use and it is now badly in need of a service. If there is some more snow forecast then you should be ok. It kind of depends on how you ride and where you go.
The hire boards looked crappy, but I wasn't paying much attention to be honest.

www.snow-forecast.com (http://www.snow-forecast.com)

althuogh they've reduced it to about 23cm, of which maybe 16cm would probably remain.

its now looking like we wont experience any heavy snow fall for upto 3 weeks... guess I'll be bringing my swimming trunks.

cheers for the posts roastbeef, guess I'll be drinking a lot more than I'll be riding this year ;)

Either way when i get back on Monday i'll upload some photos of the resort / hotel / snow situation to give you guys an idea of what to expect (for those that haven't been)

I'll be watching the webcams all week :)

Anyone here going this weekend? or is it all the 21st?

hmm well it's looking a bit dubious for the skiing for any of us! I just hope the slopes they are currently resting they leave closed so those going out may have some kind of snow! The current runs must be getting worn!

I'm looking forward to the nice break and spending some time with my bf. The snow will be a bonus xD

That's what I've been thinking too, we don't go out until the 14th so by then I expect that it will be a case of skiing totally straight to get over all the ice which will have formed, no need to be practising my turns then :sm006:

Exactly, after the last 3 weeks of madness i'm looking forward to a week off, either a bit of boarding or simply drinking beer in a cafe :sm004:

i guess this all adds to the serbian experience... with the levels of ice and rocks i guess the blue runs will be turned into black runs ;)

kopaonik will make a man of me

lol I have been known to break down and cry when I get to steep icey parts xD I hate the way one ski suddenly drops about 2 feet and the other stays nicely dug into the side. Instant splits xD

If you see a poor girl crying on the mountain side take heart and help her BF carry her down :D

i know, 4.45 is not a time you should have to be anywhere. i will be bringing matchsticks for the eyelids and an IV drip of pure caffeine to the airport....still, at least the bus ride should be in the light, so we can see exactly how close we are to dropping off the edge of the mountain and plummeting to our deaths...should wake us up a bit....

that looks much deeper than the 4cm snow-forecast predicted... hopefully by tomorrow there'll be a nice 30cm base.
here's to 100cm of snow for the 21st :dziveli:

Yeah the change on the static web cam was awesome :D From a completely clear road to semi buried looking cars and each time the tyre tracks were being filled! Please please let an unforeseen amount fall!!

Roo/Norry,

make sure you leave some snow for those of us going out on 14th, I don't want you 7th Jan'ers scraping all the lovely snow away. Fingers crossed for a continuous fall.

-JC-
02.01.2007, 18:15
cafu it looks pretty much continuous for this week then with a couple of light falls next week... so leave some snow for us poor buggers going out on the 21st ;)

i cant stop looking at the webcam, those trees look like they're drowning in snow:sm011:

What a great sight to come home to!!! Thats made my day!!

If they have been "saving" the other slopes im sure it'll be for the Serbian holidays that start this week.

We were talking to the wifes Auntie last week (who used to be married to a Serbian) and apparently the Serbs celebrate Christmas on the 7th and New Year on the 14th!

So those going out over those dates should have a fun time!
